Movie Weddings: How much would they cost in real life?
We’ve all seen the glamorous weddings in our favourite movies, and it often seems like there’s no expense spared. Designer dresses, lavish venues, and the most beautiful flowers – they’d never be able to afford that in real life, right? Well, it turns out, that’s exactly right.
How do we know? Because ladies clothing brand, Kaleidescope, took a deep dive into the costs and has uncovered how much these grand affairs would cost in real life, and believe us, it’s a lot of cash.
From the scenic wedding in Mamma Mia to the NYC bash in Sex and the City (that doesn’t quite go ahead) take a look at the breakdown of costs for some of the world’s most talked about movie weddings.
American Pie: The Wedding
American Pie is one of the most renowned teen comedies to date. The unconventional and extremely awkward love story of high school nerds Jim and Michelle had the world in stitches. But what happened when they finally tied the knot in the third movie?
The build-up to Jim and Michelle’s big day is filled with drama, from an unfortunate haircut and destroyed flowers to dance-offs and a bachelor party gone wrong. Luckily, with Stifler to the rescue, the actual ceremony goes off without a hitch.
The happy couple eventually tie the knot at The Ritz Carlton Half Moon Bay, one of the most lavish venues on our list, which costs a staggering £63,000.
Michelle’s dress comes in at around £5,000 and the band is a whopping £6,500. All in all, the total cost of this wedding adds up to £76,776 – the price of a small house!
Widely regarded as one of the greatest films of all time, this mob drama, based on Mario Puzo’s novel of the same name, focuses on the powerful Italian-American crime family of Don Vito Corleone.
“The Godfather” begins with the wedding of Connie Corleone, a member of the Corleone crime family, and Carlo, an outsider. Even though the wedding is held at their own estate, and is therefore free, the appearance of Johnny Fontane (played by real-life star Al Martino) is estimated to have cost a pretty penny.
One thing the family did splash out on, however, was hiring the late Al Martino to sing at the wedding, which compared to present day, would set you back over £150,000. The dress would cost an estimated £8,500 and the flowers just £300.
All in all, this wedding would cost £188,140.
I love you, man
Successful real-estate man Peter Klaven has it all: a great job, a beautiful home and a loving wife-to-be. Unfortunately, due to his devotion to both his work and fiancée Zooey, Peter has failed to make any friends. With his wedding fast approaching, the pressure is on to find a best man. Rather than focus on the soon-to-be-married couple, I Love You, Man takes a different approach, following Peter’s quest for a best man and best friend.
But when the wedding day does finally arrive, we wanted to know exactly how much it cost. The venue is beautiful, and it’s no wonder, as in real life it would cost almost £20,000 to get wed here.
This simple ceremony was held at the beautiful Belmond el Encanto in Santa Barbara, which took up most of the costs. The bride actually wore the lowest-costing dress from our list, costing an estimated £270 – which is a lot less than a lot of today’s brides.
The music at the wedding made up for the expense saved on the dress, and in total the whole day cost a more reasonable £27,378.
Nine intertwined stories examine the complexities of the one emotion that connects us all: love – but how much does it cost to officially say I do?
Love Actually features plenty of both happiness and heartache, making it one of the most beloved rom-coms of recent years. We watch it every year at Christmas, and the wedding is one to truly remember.
Peter and Juliet’s beautiful wedding takes place at the Grosvenor Chapel in London. However, the highlight was the elaborate orchestra, choir, electric guitar and organ combination, not to forget the late Lynden David Hall’s fantastic performance.
Again, it’s the band at the wedding that tally’s up the total cost – as it would cost a whopping £158,860. Imagine what you could do with all that cash?
One of the most expensive weddings on the list, this day would cost £166,727 overall.
If you’ve not seen the movie, here’s the lowdown. Donna (Meryl Streep), an independent hotelier in the Greek islands, is preparing for her daughter’s wedding with the help of two old friends. Meanwhile Sophie, the spirited bride, has a plan. She secretly invites three men from her mother’s past in hope of meeting her real father and having him escort her down the aisle on her big day.
Set to the music of ABBA, this family favourite is guaranteed to turn even the most casual viewer into a dancing queen.
Sophie’s small, boho-style ceremony takes place at the family hotel, which helped keep the costs down. In fact, there wasn’t much expense at all! As silver-screen weddings go, this one was very modest, with a total estimated cost of £4,905.
My Best Friend’s Wedding
If you’re not married by 28 – you probably haven’t agreed to marry your best friend. In this movie, childhood friends Julianne Potter (Julia Roberts) and Michael O’Neal (Dermot Mulroney) had a deal to marry each other if they were still single by age 28. Four days before her 28th birthday, O’Neil announces that he’s marrying a gorgeous 20-year-old named Kimberly (Cameron Diaz).
Suddenly realizing that she’s actually in love with him, Julianne vows to stop the wedding at all costs. However, when she is appointed maid of honor, things get even more complex. Not all weddings feature a maid of honor who’s secretly in love with the groom, although that’s not the strangest thing to happen in a movie wedding.
Despite having a stunning ceremony in Chicago’s Fourth Presbyterian Church, featuring a choir, pianist and band, this wedding comes in at a relatively low total cost. As with a lot of weddings, the bride refuses to be upstaged and splashes out on an expensive, one of a kind gown – just like Kimmy. The most expensive item was her dress, at an estimated £11,590.
The venue was affordable at just £2,308, and not much cash was splashed on the flowers, either, which cost just £135. In total, the wedding cost £16,663.
Sex and the City
If you’re a fan of SATC, you’ll know all about Carrie’s designer wardrobe and her taste for luxury. When she finally gets Mr. Big to walk her down the aisle, as you’d expect, she’d gone to town.
Just when we thought the couple (after 13 seasons) would finally get their fairytale ending – things don’t go quite as planned. Even if you run out on a wedding, you don’t get your money back.
The initial ceremony was held at The New York Public Library, which would cost a whopping £38,000. Carrie’s custom Vivienne Westwood gown would set you back around £18,000, however she was gifted this following a magazine shoot, so it didn’t actually cost her a penny!
